I am a professional artist specialising in animals in oils, acrylics, pastels and mixed media.
For many years we had planned a move to the country and after much searching found an extended nineteenth century cottage in rural North Devon with an indoor studio and an elevated patio area in the grounds which is ideal for outdoor painting in the summer. Our cottage is in "Tarka" country, on the high ground between the Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks, and many of my paintings feature the local livestock as well as the otters which are native to this area.
I regularly undertake commissions and have many clients throughout the UK, Europe, the United States and Asia. Together with the more usual cats, dogs, horses and cows I have painted the occasional wolf and cheetah! My original artwork and limited edition prints are sold by a number of galleries in England, and my paintings have also been shown and sold at the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art.
Earlier in my career I supplied artwork to the giftware sector, and my work has been published nationally and internationally on a large variety of giftware products, including collectors plates and greetings cards. A selection of limited edition prints is available through Buckingham Fine Art Publishers Limited (www.bucksfineart.com).
Animals have always been an important inspiration for my work, especially my own cats and dogs. I used to foster abandoned cats and kittens for an animal rescue charity, in the first summer alone housing and re-homing thirty six waifs and strays. Many of these willingly helped pay for their keep by posing as models for greeting card designs for a variety of top high street shops. As well as Heidi, our German shepherd, I currently have three cats - Tiggy and Millie started life on a farm in Somerset where I went with the intention of photographing the farmer's bull, but these two tiny kittens were so adorable I didn't need much persuading to bring them back! They too help out from time to time with modelling services. Our third cat is little Kitty, a stray that we rescued from the cold North Devon winter a few years ago and who now has her headquarters in a cabin in our garden.
Our cottage near Torrington has its own studio with self contained kitchenette, and when time allows I provide tuition by arrangement for groups and individuals. I have over the years developed an extensive range of e-workshops, self-contained courses teaching my techniques in pastel and mixed media and which include tuition via email. There is also a “Follow This” series of e-books available through www.amazon.co.uk.
